ALVAN BOLSTER RICKER MEMORIAL LIBRARY

Our Mission is to Encourage Community Members of All Ages in their Pursuit of Lifelong Learning by Providing Educational, Cultural Materials and Recreational Materials in a Welcoming Environment

**********************************************************************************************************************

Dear Ricker Memorial Library Patrons,

We are thrilled to share some big news regarding the future of our library… our expansion is finally ready to proceed to the build stage!  With this comes a change of services that we will be offering during the construction, which is approximated to last about 9 months.  While we will miss seeing you in our usual space, the closure is a vital step toward the expansion of the children’s room, offices, and the remodeling of our back entryway. We are working hard to ensure that when we reopen, you will find a library that is more accessible, updated, and ready for the future.

Ricker Memorial Library will be closing the doors beginning May 23rd to the public and will begin a transition to the town hall, next doors.  We will be re-opening to the public, in a limited capacity, on June 1st at the town hall, downstairs. Although we will not be offering our complete normal library services here is what we will be offering:

  • Partial On-site Services: You can call, come to the downstairs of the town hall or email and request books, some of our non-fiction selections s will not be available. We will have all our new books, including audio books and magazines available in our temporary space. You will be able to request interlibrary loans, or use the reciprocal program to visit and get books from neighboring libraries. You will be able to come in for a quiet place to read, do remote work, or make a puzzle at our temporary space and our patrons will also have the capability to use computers and the ability to print copies. In addition, there will still be an area for groups, such as quilters and the woodcarvers, to meet.

  • Digital access 24/7: Our digital collection through the cloud library, which includes e-books and audiobooks, will remain fully available through our website.

  • Programs: Keep an eye out for library programs, such as our Summer Reading Program, the Mystery and Lets Talk Book Group and a few special events we will have this summer. These will be held at the Town Hall! In the fall, we will start back up with our Preschool Story time, Tweens and Teens and the Lego Club.

We Know nine months is a long time, but we promise the wait will be worth it, we will be posting regular updates and “sneak peeks” of our progress on our social media platforms.

Thank you for your patience, your loyalty, and your shared love for this library. We cannot wait to welcome you back into our beautiful new space!

Warmly,

The Library Staff

Ricker Memorial Library

Chunk the Whale Program at Town Hall

Tuesday April 21rst

First Program 10-11, Second Program 11:15-12:15

Please Call or come in to sign up for either one of the times available for the Whale Program.                              998-4601 EXT. 6

The real Chunk was a beloved humpback whale frequently seen in the Gulf of Maine, known for her distinctive dorsal fin, which had a “chunk” missing—hence her name. At around 10 years old and 40 feet long, she was a familiar and cherished presence for marine enthusiasts and researchers alike. Unfortunately, Chunk passed away in the summer of 2024 after becoming entangled in fishing nets off the coast of Cape Elizabeth, Maine, highlighting the dangers marine life faces from human activities. Her story lives on through educational initiatives like “Within the Whale,” a program that uses a life-sized inflatable model of Chunk to teach people about marine biology and conservation. This interactive experience allows participants to step inside the inflatable whale, exploring its anatomy while learning about the challenges faced by humpback whales and the importance of ocean conservation. Chunk’s legacy serves as a reminder of the need to protect marine ecosystems and the creatures that inhabit them. Her story continues to inspire efforts to reduce threats like fishing gear entanglements and to foster a deeper appreciation for marine life.
